Happy New Year everyone!
And something new for 2012... I was tasked with creating a unicorn horn for a very beautiful photo shoot with photographer Melissa Marie Hernandez. We got to work with a horse and... wow, was that unpredictable!
Our idea is that unicorn bone has gold in it, and as the alicorn grows, all of the gold is compressed into the tip. The horn was carved out of urethane foam, reinforced with fiberglass cord, coated with a spackle/plaster mix, then painted with acrylics.
The horse, Precious, wore the horn no problem, but during the shoot she was thrashing around like crazy and actually broke the horn in half. Thankfully, we got the shots that we wanted before it busted too badly! You can head over to
