urethanes of choice?
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:50:15 PM »
So I have been wondering what urethane resins people here like for molds.  I want to try Repro, from Freeman, because it is supposed to be even better than BJB TC 1630, which was one of the only urethanes you could use directly in alginate and for foam latex.  Anyway, I wondering what other people's preferences were.

I've not used urethane for molding but I use Vytaflex40 from smooth on and its pretty tough stuff. It may not do what you want but its the only one I like lol

That is used for casting I think almost exclusively my friend. :)

Yeah I thought it might be. Have you used any of the polytek urethane? They advertise their stuff as pretty tough for concrete casting and so on, besides their ptflex range which seems to be for casting.

I saw someone post prosthetic molds made from urethane, hadn't seen it before, are you doing something similar?

I have made a few molds for silicone prosthetics with aluminum filled urethane from BJB called TC 1630.  Great stuff.  Freeman now has a product called Repro that is supposed to be the same thing, except better.

Polytek has some OK urethanes, but the viscosity is not what I would hope for.  Also, the ones I have used are great for casting but set too fast to be used for molds that need to be built up.  They would work alright for cast mold, meaning I build a wall and just pour the urethane in.  But that only really works for smaller snaps, things like cheeks, or noses, or lips, or eyes.

The aluminum filled urethane sounds interesting. I haven't seen it in the UK although I'm sure BJB have a retailer here somewhere. Is it in there to make the urethane tougher and/or longer lasting?

Definitely makes it tougher.  It also allows it to handle heat better.

Also see if Mouldlife has one.  They may have the Repro stuff from Freeman.  I would stick with Repro One, but Repro Slow looks interesting, albeit not quite as strong.
